We have a bird's nest right outside our backdoor in the patio. The nest is small and so perfectly constructed it looks like it came from Pier One. Inside the nest are 4 pale blue speckled eggs. Every time we come and go the poor parents freak out and fly to the fence leaving the 4 blue eggs exposed. We think they're Red-Breasted nutfinches but we're not sure. They've taken to attacking us when we open the back door. We're in a quandry...

Irene says if they don't stop attacking us we're going to eat those M&M-Peanut-sized eggs for breakfast!
I dont' know what it is about the birds in Santa Cruz, but they are scary. (Could it be the nearness of Hitchcock's "Birds" backdrop, San Juan Baptista?). I had a blackish bird swoop down on my outside Cafe Pegalosi (before the earthquake) and pull my hair out. Somebody told me it's because she was building a nest. Umm, ok.
Oh, so that's your hair! That nest is famous on "the mall".
And I thought Manhattan was a tough town!
